There are primarily four families of Live-bearing fish. Three of these groups originated in the Americas but some were introduced into Asia and from there spread to almost all tropical and sub-tropical areas including southern Europe. The familiar guppy, molly, platy and swordtail are members of the largest group, the Live-bearing Toothcarps (Poeciliidae). Then there are the Splitfins or Mexican Topminnows (Goodeidae) and the Four-eyed Fish (Anablepidae). The LIve-bearing Halfbeaks (Hemiramphidae) originate from Asia.

The Platy originates in Central America and is a very popular tropical fish. It is very easy to take care of and well suited for the freshwater fish beginner. The Platy fish comes in many different color varieties including the salt and pepper platies, the red wag tail and the tuxedo platy. There is even a variety called the Mickey Mouse. They can be a very active tropical fish if given good water conditions.Add male platys to your female tank if you prefer brighter, vibrant colors for viewing, but keep in mind that doing so will result in offspring. Consider instead introducing other breeds of male tropical fish, such as mollies or guppies, if you prefer a colorful tank but are not interested in breeding your school. Avoid aggressive species like bettas who might start fights. The southern platyfish has been released probably due to fish farm or aquarium releases. Specimens in Louisiana were collected near a tropical fish farm. Southern platies, and other introduced poeciliids, have been implicated in the decline of native damselflies on Oahu, Hawaii. Often the distributions of the damselflies and introduced fishes were found to be mutually exclusive, probably resulting from competition for limited insect food.I got a female bumblebee platy that looks quite large around the tummy. She was quite voracious and even was picking on the corycats that sit quietly on a fake rock cave. So I got a breeder net and put her in it yesterday. I've been feeding her freeze dried bloodworms, freeze dried brine shrimp and tropical fish flakes (more than the previous two).Without knowing the ph and hardness of your water we can't know if your platy is going to thrive in your tank. You can check the Tropical Fish Profiles at the top of the main page and if you can't test for those things, bring a sample to your local fish store and they should be willing to test it for you. Most cities and towns will also have the info. available online.
