Mystery Snails: One of the most readily available freshwater snails in pet stores are . These freshwater snails have shells that are generally on the dark side, with light brown and dark brown accent colors and stripes. Other Mystery Snail shells can be ivory white. The color patterns of Mystery Snails shells are unique and nearly limitless. Mystery Snails can be great aquarium cleaners, feeding on a diet of uneaten food, and dead or decaying plant matter. Mystery Snails also like supplements of bottom feeder tablets, pellets, algae wafers and fish flakes. These freshwater snails are notorious escape artists, so it’s very important to keep tanks covered to the extent possible. Thanks

Consequently these snails aren't easy to breed in captivity. Thereare a very few exceptions, like the European species Theodoxusfluviatilis, that can complete their life cycle in freshwater. But theones you see in pet shops, such as the African zebra Nerite Neritinanatalensis and the Indo-Pacific zebra Nerite Vittina coromandelianawill not breed under aquarium conditions. Water quality is important, particularly in the case of Tylomelania. These are not species for immature aquaria, and are best added after the aquarium has been running for at least a couple of months. Unlike the other freshwater snails kept by hobbyists, such as Apple Snails, these are not air-breathing snails, and they will not do well in tanks with poor water circulation or inadequate oxygen.Snails also add movement and color to your freshwater aquarium and they can be fun to watch. There are many different snail species that come in various colors, shapes and patterns and are pleasing to the eye. When it comes to freshwater aquarium snails, there are many points of view to consider. There has been an ongoing debate as to whether or not aquarium snails should be seen as beneficial pets or destructive and troublesome pests.Pond Snails are the most common species of freshwater snail. They are considered both useful and a pest. Unlike Ramshorn snails they are less likely to consume plants in the aquarium. They can however reproduce quickly often causing overpopulation. The eggs are clear jelly like clutches laid on glass and hardscape and can be easily removed. Many people decide to get freshwater aquarium snails to accompany their fish, and there is a good reason for it. However it’s not as easy as just picking up the first snails you see and dumping them into the water. Some snails are good, some are bad, and some are just a nuisance. Freshwater Nerites (pictured above) are among the most popular aquarium snails because of their exceptional algae eating abilities. Although they won’t do all the work for you, they definitely help. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, though, especially when algae are running low. To create an effective algae cleanup crew, get at least around 5 of these snails – they don’t reproduce in the aquarium, so don’t worry about them becoming pests. Be sure to close all holes in the lid, because some Nerites are true escape artists that will try to get out of the aquarium when water conditions are not ideal.
