A small fish tank is any aquarium under ten gallons (about 39liters) total capacity.

This will also depend on the fish's breed and size. Most fish only require a once-a-day feeding, though some people like to split it into two smaller feedings. Consult your veterinarian or the fish experts at your local aquarium to learn about the daily requirements for your particular breed. But be aware that a fish will eat even when it's not hungry. So there is no point feeding your water-bound pet three times a day, when once a day is sufficient.

Countless times, people have asked a store employee which fish they recommend to eat the algae that is taking over their tank. The usual response is to show a tank full of small one to two inch common plecos. While indeed these fish will nibble on the algae, they will grow to become enormous waste producing machines. The common pleco can grow to eighteen inches long and should be housed in nothing less than a ninety gallon tank as an adult. They really are one of the most unsuitable fish for the common aquarium. It is much easier for the beginner to clean whatever algae is on the glass manually than deal with these truly monstrous and not so attractive fish later on. oh wow... what was horrible. Really, really horrible. Most of those aquariums are far too small for the fish. Eugh. Pretty - and cruel.

Whilst this list is just a small example of the types of fish you can keep at home in a beginner aquarium, we believe that these 13 are perfect for those with little experience, and each tick all the boxes we mentioned before, when looking for tropical freshwater fish.Below is a typical start-up kit for a small 2 gallon mini-bow aquarium. It comes with a lighted hood, a small packet of sample fish food, an undergravel filter and a small air pump. You will need to get some other items as well for your aquarium. As mentioned previously, a small tank can be more work than a large tank because you really have to stay on top of those water changes to prevent the small aquarium from becoming too polluted. Here is a list of the bare minimum things to have for any small aquarium:However, many do start with just a small fish tank, so we want to give you a list of items to use with your small aquarium so that you can increase your chances for success in tropical fishkeeping. If you need help with setting up your new tank, check out the page.Let’s just face it: small things are cute and tiny things are even cuter. This list encompasses my favorite 11 nano species for freshwater tanks. None of the fish on the list require a tank larger than 10 gallons and majority of them can live happily in even 5 gallons.
It is important to house tiny fish with other tiny fish. The majority of the species on this list are shy, timid, and very peaceful. They can easily be out-competed for food and stressed out if placed in aquarium with larger, more boisterous tankmates. Nearly every fish on this list could live happily together in a 10 to 20 gallon aquarium except one, the pea puffer. Pea puffers can be nasty little buggers and would be best suited in a tank all on their own.Pearl Gouramis do not like to live with aggressive fish, so keep that in mind when filling your aquarium. They also like a place to hide, so a small covering of floating ferns can give them a good place to hide and feel comfortable. We have several articles on setting up a new tank with plants, here.Best Fish For Nano, Micro And Small Aquariums
