f you've ever maintained a fish tank, you should be able to master the ins and outs of a koi pond, which is essentially a super-size outdoor aquarium with filtration and aeration needs similar to its indoor counterpart's. Beautiful, exotic members of the carp family, koi have been bred for their brilliant hues by the Japanese since the early 1800s. In addition to being pretty to look at, they're hardy fish that can live a century or more (226 years being the record!). And since you live in Southern California, your koi can thrive without the stress of--or accommodations needed for--cold weather. Although the fish eat mosquitoes, plants, and algae present in the pond, I'd suggest supplementing your new pets' diets with commercial koi pellets ( carries several brands). Just like with an aquarium, stock only a few fish to start, then add more as you gain experience and the pond ecologically matures.
