The Ryukin Goldfish is an egg-shaped variety of goldfish. The body is short and stubby. Their extremely high back, which is often described as a dorsal hump, starts in the neck region and gives the Ryukin's head a pointed appearance. The Ryukin is a Japanese version of the Fantail Goldfish. Both of these goldfish will generally reach about 6 inches (15 cm), though some hobbyists report their Ryukins reaching up to a whopping 10" (25 cm). The average goldfish lifespan is 10 – 15 years, though living 20 years or more is not uncommon in well-maintained goldfish aquariums and ponds.A distinguishing feature common to both the Ryukin Goldfish and the Fantail Goldfish is the split or double caudal (tail) fin. A long-tailed version of the Ryukin is called the Fringe-tail or Ribbon-tail Ryukin. The Ryukin Goldfish are available in red, red and white, tri-color, calico, white, and chocolate.
LS: How can she keep her own sense of herself in that goldfish bowl?

I just want to say that I am guilty of almost all of these mistakes and I have been doing so for the past 3 years. I have a lonely goldfish who has been living in a 0.5L fishbowl for 3 years (I recently bought him a 1L tank since the other one cracked). Also I change the water about every two weeks and I do this by scooping the goldfish out into a cup with the original tank water and pouring all of the previous water down the drain. I then clean the tank with a little bit of soap and I swish the rocks around also. I then fill the tank up again with mid temperature tap water and add water conditioner. I then add the fish back in to the bowl and he continues on with his life. I have been doing some research on the internet about taking care of your goldfish and apparently I have been doing everything wrong but miraculously my goldfish is still living! I would just like to say that even if you make the mistakes listed above there is still hope since I have been making those mistakes and I will continue to do so for many more years to come! Ha! I got to bring my kids to set every day and they got goldfish crumbs in the Oval Office carpet.

Fantail Goldfish--another favorite animal. When I worked at a pet store, a woman came in crying because she had recently lost a beloved goldfish due to old age. She was ready for a new one. I swear a goldfish swam up to her like a dog when called! She bought him! She was a goldfish whisperer. Some people just have an affinity with other species. Amazing! To increase your chance of success with keeping them, try not to keep them in a tiny bowl. A tiny bowl will become polluted quickly and you'll have to perform maintenance all of the time. Instead get your goldfish at least a 20 gallon tank with a good power filter or canister filter. Also, if you want to keep multiples, try for a minimum of 10 gallons per goldfish after the initial 20 gallons for better long term success with this fish. The Goldfish is a favorite fish for many. How many of us didn't keep them at one time or another? Goldfish are usually very hardy fish and they can live in temperatures ranging from 40°F - 90°F (4°C - 32°C). It is important to note that this fish has an extremely long lifespan if cared for properly, so getting one can become a long term commitment. Many varieties of this fish are available with many different markings, fancy varieties and colors including gold, orange, white and black.Photo by Frédérique Voisin-Demery (Flickr) Goldfish need vegetables in their diet.
