Do cichlids need a substrate in the first place? The answer, again, depends on the nature of the species you intend to keep. Many species, including dwarf cichlids, medium-size acaras and eartheaters prefer — even require — substrates. In the case of the former the substrate is to anchor the aquatic plants, and in the case of the latter, to encourage normal “sifting” activity. In African rift lake cichlid fish, carbonate-rich substrates, such as dolomite or crushed coral, help buffer the water and contribute to the elevated carbonate hardness these fish prefer. But, they can all be raised in bare aquariums as well.

The Golden Severum is one of a slew of varieties derived from the common and popular Severum Cichlid. All Severum Cichlids are easily recognized and popular with both beginner and advanced aquarists. Severum Cichlids tend to resemble their larger cousins, the Discus cichlids, in body shape and feature a laterally compressed oval shaped frame. Their strongest deviation from the Discus fish is in their coloring and size. The Severum Ciclids tend to only reach about 7 inches (18 cm) whereas Discus can reach up to about 12 inches (31 cm). We ordered two blue peacock cichlids from LiveAquaria last year, and both are beautiful fish. One has emerged as the alpha fish of the tank and does chase and beat up on the other blue peacock as well as other male fish. I'd definitely suggest ordering only one male. However, the alpha fish is by far the most beautiful blue peacock I've seen, and I receive many compliments on his looks. LiveAquaria has high quality fish and excellent customer service. I'm very pleased with all of the fish I've ordered. Aulonocara SP. (Hybrid) OB Peacock Cichlid I have a bisque fired pair of fish (cichlids) on coral that I would like to paint resembling these colorful real life cichlids.African cichlid fish represent an unusual variety of evolutionary divergence. By analyzing the genomes of some of these species, Russell Fernald and others have provided insight into the genetic mechanisms that drive species diversification.Analysis of the genome of Astatotilapia burtoni, an African cichlid fish studied in Russell Fernald's lab, hints at how species diverge through adaptive radiation. In the aquarium Xenotilapia flavipinnis needs a little more attention than many other cichlid species. This species doesn’t do well when water conditions aren’t right. Frequent water changes are recommended to remove buildup of nitrates and other toxins. This species is very peaceful and does not do well with boisterous or aggressive fish. Best kept in large groups to recreate natural conditions and for pairs to form. After spawning, the female will hold the eggs for about 10 days and then transfer them to the male. Both parents will watch over the fry until they are old enough to go off on their own.
