Bumblebee gobies ( sp.) are interesting, small fishfrom the family Gobiidae. They are one of the few gobies that can be kept in freshwatertanks, although they are actually brackish water fish, and really need to be kept in brackishwater conditions. If you plan on breeding Brachygobius nunus, it can be a good idea to house your fish in a small aquarium. Nobody really knows why, but many aquarists have been more successful breeding Bumblebee Gobies in small aquariums than in big ones. Placing a dozen juveniles in a 10 gallon aquarium is a good way of obtaining matching pairs. The aquarium should be well decorated and include suitable “caves”, e.g. snail shells and barnacle shells. Several different species from the genus Brachygobius are commonly referred to as Bumbleebe Gobies, and in this article I will focus on the species known as Brachygobius nunus. Bumblebee gobies are called bumblebees due to their round appearance, their big heads and the fact that they display four brown to black vertical stripes over a yellow to golden background. They are also known to “buzz” from one surface to another inside the aquarium. Being true gobies, the ventral fins of these fishes have fused into a suction cup that they use to attach themselves to virtually any surface, including aquarium glass. They usually inhabit the bottom layer of the tank. Bumblebee gobies can be quite shy unless they are kept in a species onlytank. They can be kept with other species, however, you will see much more of your gobies if they are kept in a species only tank. If you do decide to keep other fish species in your bumblebee goby tank, keep in mind that they also need to bebrackish water fish. The name "bumblebee gobies" is derived from their bold blackand yellow stripes. They are small fish that typically reach an adult size of less than 2 inches (Feeding Time. Your new bumblebee gobies probablywill ignore flake foods at first. They prefer live foods (like or at least frozen shrimp (thawed, of course). Lots of other frozenbug-size foods trip their triggers -- especially when other bees compete withthem. If you keep a few large female guppies with them, your bees will findsome live food on their own. Too large a fish will intimidate them. They have a big mouth for their size, so we plan to experiment with glassworms. California blackworms go down very smooth.
