I always like to include a video in these betta guides. It would seem that the world is in desperate need of good, clear betta fish Ich videos. This one will have to suffice for now though. In the first 30 seconds and at about the 1:15 mark you will see the best shots of the Ich on the bettas tail. Ich is pretty difficult to capture on a camera. This betta has already started treatment and seems to have been improving. The video is entertaining none the less, as is the commentary! Watching it will make you smile, and I’m sure that would be a good thing after reading this Ich-y article. (I finally let myself use that pun!)

Ich or Ick is an uncomfortable disease and one of the most common among freshwater aquarium fish. Betta fish are also susceptible to ich, and ignoring treatment for too long can lead to death. Make sure you fully understand the diagnosis for Ich. Medicating a healthy fish can also have adverse consequences. To treat your betta it’s important to know that the Ich parasites are contagious and the medication is fairly strong. It’s best to move your fish to a hospital tank if he has tank mates so as not to expose them to more parasites or unnecessary medication. The medicine used may kill helpful nitrifying bacteria so activated carbon filters should be removed during the treatment process.Ich is quite easy to treat but left too long can be fatal. It’s very important to understand the life cycle of the Ich parasite in order to treat it properly. The protozoan has a three-part life cycle of which it is only vulnerable to treatment for approximately two days out of its life. Because some fish are more sensitive to medications then others I am going to go through the proper treatment for a Betta. Some fish are more delicate (like scaleless fish) and may need a modified form of treatment.Since Bettas are prone to this parasite, you need to always be on the lookout for it. If caught early it is very easy to cure. But, if it gets to advanced stages you may not be able to save the fish. Because Velvet is highly contagious and usually far advanced before being diagnosed, it is important to take steps to treat it as soon as possible. Treatment is targeted at the free-swimming stage of the parasite because the other stages are resistant to medication. It should also kill the parasites which have infested the outer layer of the skin and fins, but will fail to eradicate any parasites that have burrowed into the epithelial layer. The best time to attack velvet is when the parasite leaves the fish, so raising the temperature helps. That is why it is recommended to create conditions optimal for the parasites’ growth and multiplication and at the same time use the treatment aimed at dealing with them. If you prolong the course of treatment by prolonging the time when medication is administered, you risk poisoning the fish.•Treatment: You can treat Ick either conservatively or with medication. Ick is a parasite. Because ick is contagious, it is preferable to treat the whole tank when one fish is found to have it. Ick is temperature sensitive: Leave your betta in the community tank and raise temperature to 85 F. Then you can choose to treat with salt or medication. Conservative: Add 1 tsp/gal Aquarium Salt 3 times, 12 hours apart so that you end up with 3 times the normal concentration. Perform daily 100% water changes to remove fallen parasites before they can reproduce. Replace the water with the right amount of salt. Do not continue this treatment for more than 14 days. If it fails or you do not want to use salt, treat with Jungle’s Parasite Clear, API Super Ick Cure, or Kordon Rid Ich Plus. If yourIch is quite easy to treat but left too long can be fatal.
