Okay, with profuse apologies to the Melancholy Dane, the point I’d like to mull over in today’s post is whether it’s a good idea to use cover glasses on marine aquariums—you know, those oft-hinged glass or acrylic lids that are available in various dimensions to fit tightly atop aquariums of different sizes. The Exo Terra Screen Cover is an easy-to-install cover for aquariums and glass tanks. The lockable sliding door allows partial opening of the enclosure, thereby reducing stress to the inhabitants and the risk of escape. The strong metal screen provides ventilation and allows necessary UV penetration while ensuring reptiles and even feeding insects are safely secured. As water evaporates, it leaves behind the minerals, which adhere to the glass, leaving the ugly white residue you see.

It looks so terrible that there is a huge temptation to use home cleaning products to remove it. However, resist that urge, as even the smallest residue can be lethal to fish. There are products, such as , that are made to remove lime buildup on aquarium glass.

However, there is a readily available, inexpensive alternative – vinegar. That’s right; plain old vinegar. Lay the tank down on a towel, and pour enough vinegar on the affected glass to cover it. Leave it to sit for 10-20 minutes, then scrub with a non-abrasive pad or cloth and rinse well. You may have to repeat the process a couple of times for each side to get it all off.Here's a quick video showing how easy it is to build a sliding glass aquarium top. This project is costs less than a commercially available glass aquarium cover.Hoods are what covers the lighting fixture. They may also incorporate a plastic lid to cover the top of the aquarium as well. Hoods that cover the aquarium as well as house the light, are less expensive than a seperate lid and lighting unit. However, plastic lids generally do not fit as tightly as glass lids, therefore allowing more evaporation of the tank water. Plastic lids also tend to become brittle over time and are not as durable as glass. Its a fine glass cover if your aquarium happens to have a center brace.... This does NOT come with any type of center brace bracket insert in case you are hoping.As with so many aspects of the marine aquarium hobby, there’s no all-encompassing right or wrong answer to this question. Suffice it to say that cover glasses may be appropriate in some circumstances but totally inappropriate in others.
